چکیده

Cr and Mn monolayers on a triangular lattice are prototypical examples of frustrated spin systems in two dimensions. Collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures of these monolayers on Cu~111! substrate are investigated on the basis of first-principles total-energy calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method extended by the vector spin-density description for the interstitial and vacuum region. The search for the magnetic minimum-energy configurations included unit cells with one, two, and three atoms. For Cr the minimal energy was found for a 120° spin configuration in a ()3))R30° unit cell, which is in agreement with the classical nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. The same behavior is expected for Mn, but a surprising result was found: the minimal energy was found for a collinear row-wise antiferromagnetic structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!51008-1#

Noncollinear Magnetism

Recently, a great deal of effort has been focused on developing the so called “fully unconstrained” approach to noncollinear magnetism. This approach allows the magnetization density within a material to be calculated as a continuous vector variable of position, as opposed to using the atomic moment approximation (AMA) where a fixed quantization direction is assumed for a volumefilling sphere s...

Three-dimensional spin structure on a two-dimensional lattice: Mn/Cu(111).

Based on first-principles vector spin-density total-energy calculations of the magnetic and electronic structure of Cr and Mn transition-metal monolayers on the triangular lattice of a (111) oriented Cu surface, we propose for Mn a three-dimensional noncollinear spin structure on a two-dimensional triangular lattice as magnetic ground state. This new spin structure is a multiple spin-density wa...

Spin configuration in a frustrated ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin film system

We have studied the magnetic configuration in ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films grown around monoatomic steps on an Fe(001) surface by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ab-initio-parametrized self-consistent real-space tight binding calculations in which the spin quantization axis is independent for each site thus allowing noncollinear magnetism. Mn grown on Fe(00...

Comment on ‘ ‘ Ultrathin Mn films on Cu „ 111 ... substrates : Frustrated antiferromagnetic order ’ ’

We have studied collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures of a Mn monolayer on Cu~111! by use of the generalized gradient approximation to the density-functional theory using the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method. We found that the inclusion of the gradient correction did not significantly modify earlier results obtained in the local-density approximation. Irrespective ...

Noncollinear magnetism caused by intermixing at ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interfaces

Fe-Cr alloy layers on Fe 001 substrates with different atomic environments are theoretically investigated through a self-consistent real-space tight-binding method parametrized to density functional theory and without collinear restriction for the spin directions. We show that the intermixing at the Cr/Fe interface, experimentally observed at the first stages of the Cr growth on Fe, originates ...
